My Message to Dental Practitioners
If you are a dentist and you have patients coming to you with a persistent burning sensation throughout their mouth, I know how difficult it can be to have little to no solutions, very little formal training on it, and limited answers to give them.
I have met around ten dentists and hygienists throughout my journey. I know that you genuinely want to help, and that this is simply a knowledge gap and an under-researched condition. You are all trying your absolute best, and I truly appreciate every single practitioner I have met, even when they didn't have an answer.
At the time, as a patient in agony, it was frustrating to have no answers and to see dentists unsure of what to do, sometimes suggesting different treatments that didn't work. But I completely understand: you have limited appointment windows, you cannot spend days investigating a single case, and this is rarely taught in dental school. I get it, and I am not upset in the slightest.
My goal is to share my insights so they might be useful for some of your patients. I want to advance the research and make discoveries because I have solved my situation, at least for now, by eliminating all acids from my diet. That meant cutting all fruits, vegetables, and grains. Some people call it a radical diet; for me, I call it a saving grace diet because the pain was unbearable. It was difficult to adapt to at first, but I am grateful I did it and found support from medical doctors who discuss it and cases of people whose gum inflammation improved.
I am still actively working to understand why this diet works. From my current theories, it connects directly to exposed dentinal tubules. I have abfractions, gingival recessions, and periodontal pockets. My working model is that exposed tubules and hydrodynamic fluid pressure trigger this neuropathic fire when exposed to anything acidic, including sugar that oral bacteria metabolize into acid.
If 1% of the population suffers from Burning Mouth Syndrome, that represents 80 million people around the world. The more we talk, collaborate, and share open data, the faster we can accelerate real discoveries and improve lives.
Bridging Patients, Clinicians & Data
Real breakthroughs happen when patient observations, dental mechanics, medical diagnostics, and laboratory research connect around open data.
